Cybersecurity Awareness Month

Cybersecurity Awareness MonthThis year marks the 18th year of National Cybersecurity Awareness month in October. This year’s theme is “Do Your Part. #BeCyberSmart.” The initiative started small in 2004 and reminded people to update their antivirus twice a year the same time they change the batteries in smoke detectors. The month-long awareness campaign has come a long way since then, and now promotes cybersecurity with detailed tip sheets on individual issues. Sponsored by the Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), the alliance now promotes digital awareness and safety to consumers, small and medium-sized businesses, corporations, educational institutions, and young people all over the country.

With the escalation of ransomware attacks over the past two years, the message from CISA is more important now than ever. We have seen educational institutions, healthcare infrastructure, and supply chains impacted by cyberattacks, often through neglect of basic cybersecurity principles. Education on cybersecurity is no longer a part of the business that can be overlooked.

Each week of Cybersecurity Awareness Month has a theme. The first week is #BeCyberSmart. CISA offers tip sheets and presentations based on the weekly theme. This week is a general overview of cybersecurity including strong passwords, MFA/2FA, and online privacy. Two tip sheets we would recommend sharing with your employees are Cyber Secure at Work and Social Media Cybersecurity. October is a good time to pause and talk to employees about the importance of cybersecurity awareness at the individual level.

The second week of the campaign will highlight phishing and has some great resources to share with employees. The third week will focus on cybersecurity carriers, and those working in the industry. The last week will dig into making cybersecurity a priority for individuals and businesses. The site is a great resource for granular cybersecurity information; we encourage you to explore, share, and use the hashtag #BeCyberSmart this month.
