A video sharing platform owned by Amazon was hacked. Usernames, passwords, email addresses, and payment information were shared. Twitch is a video streaming site popular with gamers and artists. The platform allows fans to watch someone play a game live and interact with the content creator. The service suffered a major breach last week, and users’ personal information and passwords were posted online in a 125GB data dump in plain text. A list of the top paid streamers, and how much they were paid was included in the breach along with employee names, email addresses, and position within the company.
The video streaming site is popular with teens and college students. Twitch is asking users to change their password. Users should also understand that their exposed password is connected to their email, so if the password is used elsewhere, those also need to be changed.
Google is moving to two-factor authentication as the default. The tech company announced in May that it would move accounts to 2FA, now as part of Cybersecurity Awareness Month they are starting to actively move users over. A statement from the company said, “Right now we are auto-enrolling Google accounts that have the proper backup mechanisms in place to make a seamless transition to (2-step verification) 2SV.” Users tend to leave the default settings in place for online services. Google said in 2018 only 10 percent of their users were using two-factor authentication. Their goal is to auto-enroll 150 million users into 2SV by year’s end.
We shared last week that October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month hosted by CISA. This week the month-long campaign is focused on Phishing. CISA provides a mountain of great resources for employees. Two tip sheets we recommend for Phishing awareness this week are Identity Theft and Internet Scams, and the Phishing tip sheet.
