Think before you install! Only download applications from reputable sources.

Smart TVs Are Not Immune to Ransomware

As our Information Security expert, Jack Gerbs, recently discussed with Rachael Murray from WHIO, Smart TVs are a prime target for hackers.

Technology is moving so fast, that many of the vulnerabilities and security warnings are being ignored by manufacturers and the consumer may find themselves paying the price.  Although microphones and cameras on our TVs can serve as eavesdropping devices, we are now seeing network-connected TVs being hit with ransomware and being used to exploit other devices on your network.

With all of the new equipment brought into households throughout the holidays, here are a few suggestions to help safeguard your network environment.

First, be aware of the apps that you install on your Smart TV.  Just like your phone, corrupted apps can create a very vulnerable system.

Secondly, make sure that your WiFi has the security feature enabled with a very strong password or passphrase, 14-20 characters with a combination of letters, numbers and symbols is recommended.

Third, always keep your devices updated and run the updates as soon as they are available for each device.
